No Sustainability is Possible in Social Change Without Self Education

The social crisis all over the world demands a change in the very founding principles of the education system, which caters mostly for our material needs, with little room for the growth and flowering of young minds and all levels of their being. There is a critical dimension missing in our system that fails to address that the learner needs to know himself fully - body, mind, heart and soul. If academic education is built on the solid edifice of self-education, every individual will acquire a holistic, scientific, pragmatic and constructive approach to human evolution.

Self-education will address the root cause of all individual, social and even global problems as a self-educated person will be an awakened and highly creative individual, empowered by a clear understanding of himself and other human beings. This will lead to progressive scientific and economic development free from evils, social degradation and manmade calamities threatening the very existence of mankind. The conflicts and wars between nations, societies and cultures will not arise when there is deep understanding of man, nature and the truth about human existence.

Only such an education puts people first since it starts with and focuses on the individual throughout the process – the centre of all development and evolution. It taps into his inner being, irrespective of social conditions, status, creed and other denominations. Through self-education, every individual enjoys the same opportunity to develop and grow as a sane human being capable of taking the right decisions and becoming a responsible citizen of the planet.

The proposal of the introduction of self-education is to strike a balance in the curriculum so that after schooling, an individual is in harmony with himself and his environment, with a liberated, spontaneously virtuous and responsible mind also capable of using academic education for the welfare of mankind.

Mrs. Soobhagwatee Dhunookchand has very extensive experience in the education sector. She has a Masters in Education and has followed several other courses in early childhood education, school management, living values and so on. She has more than 25 years of experience in teaching as well as in education administration. She has worked as a teacher, directorate of education, director of secondary schools before occupying the post of Chief Technical Officer in the Ministry of Education. Presently she is the Deputy Chairman at the Public Service Commission. She has also participated in several conferences in the education field.
