Sustainability Designed Learning Environment for Preschool Children: The Case of Latvia

This study underscores a sustainability perspective as essential in preparing preschool children for their studies at school. Education in a sustainability oriented preschool environment puts it’s emphases on a holistic upbringing of children, by taking into account cognitive, affective, and psychomotor development of a child as rooted in a socio-cultural environment. The study is grounded on theories of leading scholars in the field of preschool pedagogy and psychology. The study highlights that a sustainability-oriented preschool educational environment fosters a holistic development of a child and is more efficient as compared with the environment that is not sustainability oriented. The study points to the increasing understandings of sustainability in education that leads to adopting more sustainable practices in the preschool curriculum design that leads to the growth of commitment for sustainable practices. The study highlights criteria of a sustainable learning environment as implemented in the preschool setting.

Valerijs Dombrovskis is a docent at Daugavpils University, Faculty of Educational and Management, Department of Pedagogy and Educational Psychology. He obtained a doctorate degree from the Latvian University. Valerijs is engaged in successful cooperation with the Baltic and Black Sea Circle Consortium in educational research. He is in the Latvian Council of Sciences and is an expert in psychology. Valerijs is a participant in the organization and management of different professional development courses for university lecturers, school teachers, the unemployed, and other interested parties. The area of his research is reorienting teacher education towards the aim of sustainability.

Vadims Marasovs is a lecturer at Lärkkulla Folk Academy. Murasovs holds an MA in psychology, a MA in Baltic Studies, and a MA in International Relations.
