Pupils’ Ability to Interpret Bar Graphs

The development of pupils’ ability to interpret data belongs to the essential component of science education. The present research investigates pupils’ abilities to interpret data which are presented in a bar chart and to justify their answers. Therefore, a questionnaire was constituted which was dispensed to 216 pupils of primary school (age 11-12). Pupils’ answers and their explanations were classified to levels. The analysis of pupils’ answers and explanations allowed for mapping pupils’ abilities to extract information from a bar chart, to identify and compare trends from bar chart’s data, as well as to justify their answers. The analysis revealed that pupils’ ability to compare trends from bar chart’s data is less developed in relation to their ability to identify trends from bar chart’s data and to extract information from it. Moreover, it emerged that pupils’ ability to justify their answers is limited

Dr. Michael Skoumios obtained a first degree in physics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1987, a second degree in education from the University of Aegean in 1992, and his PhD in science education from the Hellenic Open University in 2005. His research interests include science concept learning and teaching science in primary and secondary schools. He is currently teaching science education in the Department of Primary Education of the University of the Aegean.
