Exploring Learning during Study Tours: Participant Perspectives
The paper reports on cultural learning by Taiwanese students on study tours to the USA, UK and Australia. Analysis reveals how students grappled with 'making meaning' of western culture.

Shin-Yu Miao teaches English at the Department of Applied Foreign Languages of Ling Tung University, Taiwan. As part of her work, she leads study tours for the University students to English speaking countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia; she has now led 8 study tours to these destinations. Interested in the students' impressions during the study tours, Shin Yu has been promoted to the new position of associate professor after the study of her PhD at the University of South Australia to write about the nature of the students' English language and cultural learning during the study tours.
Roger Harris has had extensive experience in teacher training and research in the fields of adult and vocational education. He is currently Director of the Centre for Research in Education, Equity and Work, Hawke Research Institute, at the University of South Australia. He has a keen research interest in national training reform, and is a regular presenter at conferences and publishes widely. He has won a number of nationally competitive grants, and is the current editor of the Australian Journal of Adult Learning.
Robert Sumner is a private researcher. His PhD was in the history of adult education in Australia. He has had almost 35 years in the higher education and the vocational education sectors, particularly as Director of Planning within the University of South Australia. He has won grants for a range of research projects funded by various bodies, and his research has involved both quantitative and qualitative approaches.
