India’s Higher Education System, one of the largest in the world, has seen tremendous growth in the country for about six decades since its independence. The expansion of higher education in India has been rapid since the achievement of independence. In 1947, there were 636 colleges in the country, now there are 16,885 colleges where 99.54 lakhs students enrolled and 4.57 lakhs teachers appointed in the colleges. This paper describes the different aspects of diversity, role of higher education and initiative taken in this regard. The paper then describes the Campus Diversity Initiative (CDI) funded by Ford Foundation and its impact on campus life. In this paper the following issues are being addressed: Meaning of diversity, Initiatives taken for supporting diversity, Role of higher education in this regard, and, To determine the issues to be resolved in deciding the next steps.
