India is witnessing a proliferation of management and technical institutes. The past few years have seen a tremendous rise in the privately managed professional colleges-engineering as well as management disciplines. While the intention of making professional education accessible to the masses is noble, yet it must not be at the cost of the quality of education. With the industry getting intensely selective about recruitment standards, the pressure is on the institutes to deliver. National surveys conducted by reputed organizations point out lack of quality orientation at most of the business management as well as engineering institutions in the country. Those that are especially coming under the scanner are the privately managed business and engineering colleges in most states. The ultimate loss is that of the student-an important stakeholder in the education process. The present research explores the perceptions of students as to what exactly constitutes quality in professional education. The paper examines perspectives relating to implementing quality initiatives-specifically quality at the source- in these institutions of higher learning and concludes that ‘quality’ is actually about changed mindsets, increased accountability and enhanced efficiency.
