Phishing: Challenges and Issues in Malaysia

According to Malaysian Computer Emergency Response Team (MyCERT) the number of forgery incidents especially phishing cases in Malaysia had enormously increased. This social engineering act which tricks someone into giving their confidential information is becoming a major threat in securing a person private identity. Therefore, this paper will discuss the challenges and impacts of phishing in Malaysia. A survey is done to analyze the respondents’ opinions towards phishing issues, how the phishing affected their daily operation, how they get to know about phishing, how they react to phishing incident and prevention levels in organizations. From the result, the mitigation steps in reducing phishing are recommended. Although the study was done in Malaysia, it is expected that the same pattern occur around the globe. This paper could be used as a guidance and recommendation to the
public and any related sectors in combating phishing.

Madihah earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)and her Master’s Degree in Software Engineering from Universiti Malaya (UM). Shaharudin Ismail

Lecturer, Faculty Science and Technology, Islamic Science University of Malaysia (USIM), Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia

Earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from University of Denver, Colorado, USA in 1994 and his Master’s Degree in Information Technology (Computer Science) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 2005. He is currently working as lecturer at the Islamic Science University of Malaysia (USIM). Prior to that, he worked as Policy Research Executive at National ICT Security and Response Centre (NISER). He was responsible on creating and managing strategic role initiatives for NISER. He also did research and analysis on ICT related matters especially in the field of information security. He served MIMOS Berhad for 9 years since 1995. In 2001, Shaharudin led the Software Quality Assurance (SQA) team in the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) application project named iVEST

Mohd. Yamani Idna Idris obtained both his B.Eng. (Hons) in Electrical Engineering (2000) and Master of Computer Science (2002) from University of Malaya. Currently he is a lecturer in the Department of Computer System & Technology, University of Malaya. His research interest is in the area of security, system on chip and intelligent system.
