DiGLiB: Gateway to Digital Libraries and Searchable Databases

Technological forces have and continue to change the global economy and the way of life in today’s world. The Internet and associated technologies have spurred evolutionary in traditional library and educational processes in academic institutions. Currently, academic libraries are in synch with using content providers, educational portals, scholarly databases, delivery systems and integrated solutions to foster the digital learning endeavour. As such digital library system are being built in libraries in most academic institutions. However, as these systems are being built isolated according to the institution needs and based on existing library functions, it results in several problems such as the inability to identify existing online databases and collections subscribed by the library, difficulty to obtain current educational materials, limitation of availability of web based educational resources in existing digital libraries , the intricacy to directly access a specific library web site and the aggravation of obtaining specific requirements or materials needed. This is due to poorly designed interfaces, unstructured design of information layout and lack of skills and knowledge among users to retrieve the required information through the library’s web site. Therefore, the aim of this research is to provide the facilities for users to obtain relevant information through a digital library gateway that would provide information sources in databases available in libraries, locally and abroad and other searchable databases. In addition, the research also aims to provide an access point that would also allow users to access varieties of academic information resources available online particularly academic web documents and other educational materials embedded in academician personal web sites. As such, a gateway to digital libraries will be designed to include information on every library’s web site (i.e. including the online databases subscribed), to incorporate a directory that would assist in information search processing and to utilize an extraction mechanism that would provide accessibility to personal web academic documents and relevant educational materials.

The I am teaching Information and Communication Skills, Information Organisation and Information Facilities. The two products from the ‘Business Knowledge engineering system and ‘gateway to access digital libraries and searchable databases’ had won 3 gold awards at national and International Product Exhibitions.
