Student Perceptions of an Effective Professor: A Comparison of American and Chinese Students

The purpose of this study is to compare student perceptions of effective professors in the U.S. and China based on the data collected from an American university and a Chinese university. Through a factor analysis, all characteristics are grouped into six dimensions (Class Involvement, Connection, Knowledge, Course Implementation, Charisma, and Academic Currency).

The results show that American students consider Connection, Charisma, Class Involvement, and Knowledge more important characteristics of an effective professor than Chinese students. Students in both countries place similar importance on a professor’s ability to accomplish course objectives and maintain academic currency. The findings also show that a student’s status (freshman, sophomore, junior and senior) does not impact his/her perception of teaching effectiveness in either country. Gender impacts the perception of American students and has no impact on the perception of Chinese students. Moreover, the interaction effects were found between country and gender, and between country and status, in explaining certain dimensions of teaching effectiveness. The implications of this research are also discussed.
