The present work arose from this researcher’s real life experiences with students in several classrooms in different countries. Many students found numerous mathematical concepts difficult to grasp and apply to real life situations. By presenting those difficult-to-understand concepts in the form of poetry, mathematics came to life for the students. Their interest in the subject was heightened, their understanding became clearer and their enthusiasm was aroused. Except in a few instances, most of the poems are deliberately kept as one pagers. It is hoped that this blend between mathematics and the arts will promote interdisciplinarity and result in renewed interest in mathematics as a discipline useful to everyday situations.

Dr. Betty McDonald is currently the Coordinator of The Centre for Assessment and Learning at The University of Trinidad and Tobago. At City University, University of London and University of Manchester in England she collaborated with fellow researchers in assessment. At Pennsylvania State University, USA she was a Fulbright Humphrey H. Fellow. Dr. McDonald was also a Visiting Professor to Huazhong Normal University in China, The University of Witwatersrand and UNISA in South Africa and Visiting Scholar to The University of Technology, Sydney, Australia and The University of Toronto, Canada. She is currently a member of AERA/NCME, CRESST, ASCD, UNA-USA. She has numerous international publications in refereed journals like The School Psychology International Journal, Research in Education Journal, Assessment in Education and The International Journal of Vocational Education and Training. She is a reviewer for several journals and a consultant for The Assessment and Learning Research Synthesis Group Project at The University of London. A proud recipient of numerous awards including the prestigious UNESCO Award for her contribution to national development in the area of education, Dr. McDonald has 37 years experience at the secondary and tertiary levels in Barbados, Belize, England, Jamaica and The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. She also served as Assistant Registrar at The Caribbean Examinations Council in Barbados. Her interests include measurement, assessment, applied statistics and mathematics education.
