Cantonese opera is a local cultural treasure of Hong Kong. With lots of language (Cantonese), literature and cultural elements, it is surely not pure entertainment. The “Integrated Cantonese Opera in Chinese Language Education in Hong Kong” project aims to integrate Cantonese opera into the Chinese subjects’ school-based curriculum, especially for the sake of the New Senior Secondary Curriculum, which will be implemented in year 2009. The project guides students to learn, praise and respect the traditional Chinese culture, which hopefully will help passing this valuable asset onto the next generation. The project includes workshops on Cantonese Opera acting, appreciation of scripts and also research projects on special topics related to Cantonese Opera.
The project is carried out by the Center for Advancement of Chinese Language Education and Research, in the Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong. The first stage of the project has successfully completed in May 2007. This paper concludes the teaching experience and learning outcome of the first stage of the project. It also gives some suggestions on the possible development of Cantonese Opera-in-Education.
