Teaching Science in Thai Secondary Schools Using Experimental Kits
This study was to develop low-cost experimental kits and to design learning tools for Thai secondary school science teaching. Test kits provide a rapid testing device. The test kits used in the study were based on colorimetric analyses. The experimental kit was designed to support students exploring and learning issues associated with substances, solution and the properties of consumer products and the environment. It consisted of instructional manuals for teacher and student activities, lesson plans, assessment items in addition to the test kits for pH, phosphate and dissolved oxygen provided to help students’ learning effectively. Pre-knowledge and post tests were conducted before and after using the experimental kit. The data were analyzed both in quantitative and qualitative views. Findings showed that the experimental kits could increase understanding of chemistry concepts and students enjoyed using the experimental kits while learning essential concepts and making more discussion in science.

I have been received the scholarship from The Promotion of Science and Mathematics Teachers Project, Thailand. I am studying Ph.D. program in science and technology education (chemistry) at Mahidol University. My work focused on the development of test kit and teaching material for creating concept, achievement and attitude in chemistry such as a field test kit for determination which is applied for monitoring water quality analysis and teaching material for demonstration or individual laboratory for learning chemistry contents with secondary level students. Moreover, there are many parameters of field test kit such as phosphate, sulfide, lead, arsenic, iron, manganese, fluoride, DO, nitrate and mercury which were produced by Mahidol University. All of them will be created to a teaching material on general and environmental chemistry.

Professor Dr. Juwadee Shiowatana graduated B.Eng. and M.Sc., Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, 1975 and Ph.D., University of New South Wales, Australia, 1986. She is a specialist on spectroanalytical Chemistry, Analytical atomic spectroscopy and environmental analytical chemistry. She organize her the group of student “Problem-Solving Analytical Chemistry (PSAC)”. She is an inventor of field test kits for environmental monitoring granted UNICEF research and the novel continuous-flow sequential extraction for speciation of heavy metals in solid. She has been received the grant form Petroleum Authority of Thailand and International Tin Research Institute Research Fellowship.
