The Influence of Youth Personality towards Racial Integration

It has been hypothesized that socio-cultural environment has considerable influence on the development of personality. Youth in Malaysia have experienced education system, social and administrative policies that help develop individuals to mature and be tolerant of ethnic differences. The aim of this study is to examine the influence of Malaysian youth personality of different ethnicity and residence towards racial integration. A sample of 563 form four students in Selangor, Malaysia was administered the Malay version of NEO PI-R (Mastor, Jin & Cooper, 2000) which consists of 240 items measuring five major domains of personality and Inter-Ethnic Tolerance Questionnaire (IETQ) for attitude and racial behaviour. Comparative analyses were conducted using ANOVA across different environments (rural, urban) and ethnic dominance by area (dominated by own ethnic, dominated by other ethnic or mixed ethnics dominancy). Findings show that the level of ‘agreeableness’ domain, ‘straightforwardness’ and ‘modesty’ facets in Malay youth living in rural areas are significantly higher than those of Malay youths living in city or town areas. The ‘action’ facet in Malay youths living in the city is significantly higher than for those living in rural or town areas. Among Chinese youths, ‘modesty’ is significantly higher than for those living in rural or town areas, while ‘extraversion’ domains and related facets among Indians are also significantly different across locations. Malay youths residing in places where other ethnic groups are dominant differ significantly in the ‘extraversion’ and ‘openness’ domains. Chinese youths living in mixed or other ethnic dominancy have higher levels of ‘agreeableness’, while Indian youths in other ethnic dominance areas have significantly higher traits for ‘extraversion’ and ‘openness’ compared to those living in their own or a mixed ethnic area. These differences need to be considered in order to understand the linkages between youth personality and behaviour towards racial integration.
