A Review of an ESOL Programme for Pre-literate Refugees: An Innovative Response to the Varied and Substantial Educational Needs of a Refugee Community in Auckland, New Zealand
The programmes are part of the Ministry of Education's National Adult Literacy Strategy and are based on a variety of service provision and funding arrangements.

Keryn McDermott was involved in the delivery of on-arrival education programmes for refugees and their dependants for thirteen years. She managed these multi-sectorial programmes for nine years. Subsequently she has lectured in Sociology and conducted research into the factors which facilitate successful resettlement and effective English for Speakers of Other Languages programmes for adult refugees. She is currently involved in doctoral studies regarding best practice in refugee resettlement service delivery.
